Telepresence

Telepresence is an expansion on video conferencing.    It involves providing a higher sensory (visual and audio) experience.  It is a very expensive proposition.  Typically an entire conference room becomes dedicated to telepresence meetings.  Costs on the low side are $100K per location up to $500K or more.  The justification for such an expense is the savings in time and travel expenses.  As a case in point, a friend and business associate of mine recently had several telepresence job interviews.  He commented to me that it was almost like “being there” and he did not have to travel 3 time zones for preliminary interviews with the giant networking company he was interviewing with.  His prospective employer saved both on the travel cost and the interviewer’s time.

No wonder that Cisco saw an opportunity when it recently purchased Tandberg, a major player in the global video teleconferencing market. Telepresence promises to bring geographically dispersed groups closer together.
